On average people will drink anywhere from 1 to 4 cups of coffee a day. But most of these people would not have never of stopped and thought about the chemical content in the coffee they are drinking. Or whether their coffee may contain mold. Or whether or not their coffee may be contributing to health problems. until recently I was one of those people.
I had never been a coffee drinker, purely because I didn't like the taste. And then one day Matcha just didn't give me the kick I needed, so I tried a coffee and enjoy it. I instantly became hooked and before I knew it I was spending up to $50 a week on coffee. But before long coffee was no longer giving me the energy I required, so I knew my adrenals were starting to suffer.
Side note: Our adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and their function is to release hormones that trigger the fight or flight response when we’re confronted with stressors. Caffeine stimulates your adrenal glands, meaning every time you drink coffee you are triggering the bodies fight or flight response.
I then heard about Bulletproof Coffee. Now don't get me wrong, Bulletproof is full of goodness but it is still coffee and caffeine is still initiating your stress response. So if you find you need several coffees a day for an energy pep up, your adrenals most likely need a break from coffee. I would suggest going at least 14 days caffeine free to reset your adrenals. Also most people switch breakfast for a Bulletproof coffee, however I would not recommend this for everyone and personal I do not do this. Even though your bulletproof has great fats and protein in it, I still believe in food before stimulants.
So what's Bulletproof Coffee?
Well it all starts with the beans. You need to a particular type of mold free coffee that is loaded with antioxidants, b vitamins, potassium and more and gives you an abundance of energy. See here.
Then we add an abundance of good quality fats that will help sustain your energy, balance hormones and boost cognitive function.
We then add any 'superfoods' you are wanting to sneak into your diet. Below is a list of what I like to add to my Bulletproof Coffee.
- Maca Powder - Balance hormones
- Licorice root powder - Supports adrenal glands
- Cinnamon - World of benefits
- Turmeric - Anti inflammatory properties
- Pepper - Helps the absorption of the Turmeric
- Collagen - Protein, skin health, gut health
