Luke Hines first popped onto our TV’s in the 2013 season of My Kitchen Rules. Since then his career has exploded and he is now gracing the Australian stage with Pete Evans an the Paleo Way Tour, starring is his own cooking vidoes, writing his own cookbooks and showing us all how to live a healthy and happy life. As you can imagine, we were pretty starstruck when we got to chat with Luke and were so inspired by what he had to say.
Tell us a little about your journey and who you are?
Hey guys, thanks for having me! It is awesome to be able to share with your tribe a little bit more about myself. For those who aren’t familiar with what I do, I am all about helping people achieve their best life through training smart, eating clean and feeling good. On a day to day level this is done through my work as a fitness professional and healthy cook book author. If i am not out and about working up a sweat, I am back in the kitchen creating and sharing recipes that make you look and feel your best!
You live by a palaeolithic style of eating. Can you explain this lifestyle a little more?
Well, the paleo style of eating is all about nourishing your body with the most nutrient dense foods on the planet and avoiding those foods that can cause us harm or inflammation. So whether you call it paleo, primal or #jerfing, its about eating from a variety of sustainable sources of land and sea protein, heaps of delicious and vibrant fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as plenty of nuts, seeds, herbs and spices. I am getting hungry just writing about it! I guess its important to note it isn’t just a way of eating , but also a way of living. Paleo should reflect in all aspects of your life such as living a sustainable life that respects the environment around us.
What do you feel the biggest benefit of the ‘hunter and gatherer’ way of living is?
Well firstly you stay really fit from chasing the wooly mammoth around all day! Just kidding, I think the biggest benefit of this way of life is the fact you get to enjoy an abundance of food in its most natural and delicious state! Real food, cooked cleanly doesn’t need bells and whistles to taste phenomenal. Plus, this lifestyle has so much variety. I never eat the same think too often because of the array of choices.
You starred on MKR in 2013 and made amazing healthy creations. What did you learn from your experience with My Kitchen Rules?
Wow! Time is flying, it feels like just yesterday! MKR taught me that with hard work and dedication you truly can achieve anything! I could not cook to save myself before that show, and after hours of reading cook books and practical experience in the kitchen I was fortunate enough to make the semi finals! I pinch myself still today at the fact I got to experience that time in my life!
You are on a mission to prove to Australia that healthy food can be tasty food. What is your favourite go to healthy meal?
I sure am! And I really believe it. When you start eating clean, your taste buds develop to really adore fresh and healthy food! You really notice when something is spicy, or zesty, sharp or tangy! It is exciting for the tastebuds! I think my favourite go to meal would actually be my healthy muffins! I make an array of clean treats, and my muffins packed with fresh fruit, nuts and seeds are certainly baked a lot in my house. Plus they are gluten, dairy and processed sugar free, so what’s not to love?!
What are your ‘non negotiables’ when it comes to your health?
Training 6 days a week is a must for me! Not for the physical but for the mental release it gives me. I find when I am in the gym, or running or swimming I release a lot of my stress and clear my head for the day or week ahead. Its incredible how positive exercise can make you feel not only about how you look but how you think and feel.
I also must get 8 hours sleep! haha, I am such a sleep baby. I am very nerdy and head off to bed at 9pm, and wake every day at 5am. Its a routine my body loves and I feel I get the most out of each day! Well I certainly see all the daylight there is! Sleep is vital for muscle repair and growth, as well as assisting weight loss, reduce stress and increase happiness.
What is your best exercise advice for our Freedom Wellness family?
To believe in yourself enough to make the changes needed to live your best life. It could mean detaching from a negative relationship in your life, or letting go of anger from the past. Perhaps it is respecting yourself enough to make the right food and exercise choices to achieve the goals you deserve. Whatever it is you need to do to be a healthier and happier version of yourself, you need to be the one making the changes and believing it is possible because no-one is here to do it for you. You are the change you have been waiting for.
How do you spend the first 80 minutes of your day?
I wake up, walk straight outside and give my puppy chia a cuddle in her kennel! If i don’t she will start barking for my attention once she realises I am awake and I am sure the neighbours don’t need to hear that haha! I then prepare an almond milk coffee on my home espresso machine, get my joggers on and head down to the beach with chia to complete beach sprints and a swim before coming home to bacon, eggs and paleo toast for breakfast!
What is the single best thing you believe someone should do to get their health and wellness journey started?
Be committed to themselves! Be so dead set committed that no matter what anyone says, even the negative voices in our heads, that they don’t give up when its hard. They must promise themselves that if they fall off its ok, and to simply get back up and keep fighting for what they deserve! Life is short and it saddens me when I see people living clouded without reaching their full potential. Too often people wait to be saved or rescued, and the truth is, they are the ones that can save themselves! People should feel empowered that each day the sun rises is another day they can make the right choices to be the best version of themselves.
