Tell us a little about your journey and who you are?
I’m a fitness fan turned personal trainer and soon to be group instructor that also dabbles in holistic nutrition! I grew up playing sports and that turned into a college running career. So when it was over I guess I just couldn’t get away from fitness related things and instead of acting like I thought I would do, I got certified to train. I’m so glad I did!
What is your health and wellness philosophy?
I believe in finding what works for you personally. Fitness and health shouldn’t be something that you dread all day and then want to quit the entire session! Finding something that motivates you to want to move is so important! Finding a balance of good nutrition and enjoying yourself that works for you is another thing that I think is really key.
What are your ‘non negotiables’ when it comes to your own health?
I would say getting my workout in consistently or if not my usual workout, at least some activity, is my biggest thing. I’ll eat candies or desserts occasionally on holidays or on trips so while nutrition is huge it’s something that I don’t have trouble being lenient with sometimes! However, I find that when I’m not active for a few days I really tend to get irritable and feel kind of crummy. Just making sure I get some type of activity in most days, even when I don’t want to, really makes all the difference in how I feel mentally and physically.
Tell us about The Get Fit Guide?
It’s a 12 week guide based on the way that I train and that I’ve found to be most effective! I’ve done lots of different types of training, from running to hours of lifting and I really think that the balance between weights and bodyweight plyometric works great for getting your heart rate going and building muscle to burn fat and get the muscle tone as well.
Through training your clients and having great success, what do you believe is the key ingredient when it comes to having someone having a successful exercise routine?
Making it somewhat fun is huge. Nobody wants to go to do the same 10 exercises on repeat for the rest of their lives. The main thing is making it something that a client wants to follow. So it has to be something that they like at least somewhat and a routine that they believe is going to work for them. If they don’t think it’s going to work, then they’re not going to put the effort in to do the routine and then it really won’t work.
You have a background in cross country running and track. What is your favourite way to move your body now?
I will say that it isn’t running! I still run intervals or hills occasionally but I really enjoy HIIT workouts and free weights, mainly the way my guide is set up actually. There’s so much more variety in this type of training and you always have a mini goal to focus on- get through this interval- which is great for keeping me engaged and working!
Holy moly you create some yummy recipes haha I’m drooling just looking at them. What is your favourite to go recipe?
Well thank you!! To be completely honest cooking is not a big talent of mine. I try probably 3 or 4 things that don’t work before I get the recipe that I can actually share! Which sounds crazy! Right now my favorite has to be the simple granola I make (which is on my blog!) because I am a massive smoothie bowl fan and granola makes them 1000 times better than they already are.
We believe that how you spend the first 80 minutes of your day sets up how the rest of your day will flow. Tell us about your ideal way to spend the first 80 minutes of your day?
On a perfect day I’d get up and read my devotional before getting out of bed, head to the kitchen to have a small pre workout breakfast, get my workout clothes on and go get sweaty! Ideally I’d love to be able to fit 20 or so minutes of yoga in after every workout as well but that is not happening in my actual mornings yet! And of course I’d love to always have time to make my favorite bigger post workout breakfast of sweet potato chips, eggs and avocado. My days have a lot to do with figuring out what I’ll be eating next haha!
What is the best advice you have ever received?
Not to worry about what others think. I spent a lot of my teenage years worrying what others would think of me and it made me self conscious and very quiet in social situations. It doesn’t matter if other people like you or what you are doing, what matters most is that you like yourself.
What is the single best thing you believe someone should do to get their health and wellness journey started?
Setting specific goals, believing in your ability to achieve them and that you are worthy of those goals. It’s so important that we build ourselves up with our thoughts rather than tear ourselves down. The difference it makes in our journey and life as a whole is incredible! And having those goals helps to keep us motivated on days when maybe we could just skip the workout and go for the pizza and ice cream.
Where can our FW family find you?
