fitnessfoodie-1 Edited (1)Tell us a little about your journey and who you are?

I’m a health food blogger, social influencer, magazine columnist, Jamie Oliver Food Ambassador, Yoga Teacher and owner of Fit Mixes. I haven’t always been so health orientated though, not did I plan to write. My recent journey to where I am today has been quite organic – I just say yes to every opportunity that comes my way!

I never intended to have a blog. When I arrived in Australia 5 years ago, I had no idea how to cook. I had survived my university years on cereal and biscuits. When I landed in Australia with my partner, I knew I needed to grow up and eat real food – it was the perfect clean slate. I rang my mum to ask for some basic recipes, like how to boil an egg (seriously!) and how to cook a chicken breast. Over the course of the next 6 months, I started recreating the recipes I used to have at home, but was amazed at some of the unhealthy ingredients that were hiding in there. Lots of butter, white flour, sugar, cream and more. I began swapping out some of the ingredients for healthier things like Greek yoghurt and experimenting with new foods like nutritional yeast. The successful recipes were emailed home to my mum for her to try – a kind of recipe exchange. Another few months on, and my mountains of emails began to get out of hand. My parter suggested I use some sort of electronic documentation system so both my mum and I could refer to the recipes online. He set me up on WordPress, and the rest they say, is history!

What is your health and wellness philosophy?

I don’t like to have rules around food, but my general approach is a lot of fresh, whole foods. Most days I eat a lot of lean protein and veggies, and plenty of healthy fats. I think I devour at least 5 avocados a week! For something extra yummy I love protein balls (enter my Fit Mixes), dark chocolate or banana ice-cream.

You are an ambassador for Jamie Oliver’s Real Food revolution. Tell us about your love for real food, have you always been a real foodie or is this something that has changed your life?

Changing from processed, pre-packaged foods to whole foods has totally changed the way I feel in every way. I have more energy, clearer skin, I feel stronger and my immune system is in top shape. I never knew eating processed food had such an impact on all those things. Now I want everyone to experience the same – so I try to spread the word as much as possible through Jamie’s Food Revolution.

What are your ‘non negotiables’ when it comes to your own health and well-being?

There’s a couple that I stick to consistently:

1. No refined sugar. I used to eat a lot of it, and when I cut it out, I finally realised how bad it had been making me feel. Never again!

2. Move my body some way every single day. A sweaty workout, a long walk, yoga, or even just some stretching. Whatever it takes to make me feel good.

What’s your favourite to go recipe?

At the moment it’s crispy skinned salmon for dinner with a new orange sauce that I whip up using organic ground peel. A side of steamed green beans and asparagus makes the perfect accompaniment while I catch up on the evening news. Any dish that takes more than 30 mins of my time to prepare is too much work on a weeknight! I need it nutritious, and I need it fast.

I am super excited because you have created ‘Fit Mixes’ and Freedom Health Food Store is lucky enough to be stocking these mixes. What was the inspiration behind your mixes?

Choc_Chia_Balls_Edited_copy_grandeWhen I travelled to Australia from the UK my interest in healthy living was sparked, so I swapped the chocolate bars for store-bought bliss balls to kick my sweet tooth. I quickly realised they were packed with dates – high in fructose which gave me blood sugar spikes and more cravings. I thought making my own would solve that, but every recipe I found required a blender which I didn’t have access to. I had to solve my own pain point. The result was Fit Mixes – fructose free, high protein DIY mixes that are ready to make with just a bowl + spoon. Healthy snacks in under 5 minutes, for under $1 per ball. It made a lot of sense to me, and seemingly since they launched it’s been super popular with other people too!

We believe that how you spend the first 80 minutes of your day sets up how the rest of your day will flow. Tell us about your ideal way to spend the first 80 minutes of your day?

On waking I always check my emails for any urgent tasks, then check Instagram and usually post a snap. Then I get up, throw on some gym gear and work out. I stick Spotify on for motivational tunes for a good start to the day!

What is the single best thing you believe someone should do to get their health and wellness journey started?

Really understand your eating habits and understand how to read nutrition labels on packets. There’s so many hidden ingredients lurking – its really important to know what you’re fueling your body with and where that could be improved. Try to aim for a lower sugar intake and see how your body reacts – I try to stick to 20g a day as a maximum, which is usually through fruit and veggies.
